Things are heating up in Arrowhead Game Studios' Helldivers 2, and not necessarily in a good way. While the long-awaited Helldivers sequel started out strong for Sony in 2024, it's since been hit by all the usual complaints we've come to expect a modern shooter to suffer with.
From balancing issues to a lack of updates, there are accusations that glitches and bugs galore are being ignored while the devs roll out cosmetic packs in an attempt to cover up the cracks. Unfortunately, the release of the Freedom's Flame Premium Warbond has only fanned the flames of controversy.
Helldivers 2 players unconvinced by Freedom's Flame Premium Warbond
Arrowhead is clearly impressed with the Freedom's Flame Premium Warbond, cranking up the heat in time for summer. An official PlayStation blog explains what's included, with Helldivers 2 burning bright on August 8. Highlights include the SG-451 Cookout shotgun with phosphorus pellets and Firebomb Hellpods to flambé your enemies.
It seems that the average Helldiver is less enthused and mainly confused about whether this fiery armour will include flame resistance. After all, how often have we been inadvertently cooked by a comrade using the flamethrower?
This is a valid concern, and with the description of the new FLAM-66 Torcher saying, "Sounds safe. It isn’t. Watch where you're standing," we're rightly concerned. There's at least some good news, as the blog confirms the new I-09 Heatseeker and I-102 Draconaught have 75% damage resistance to fire.
In response to the reveal, others weren't impressed. One disgruntled gamer wrote, "Skins aren't going to cut it anymore. Need the new enemy faction," asking where the Illuminate faction is. Another wrote, "Plus 250 new bugs (dev bugs)," and a third concluded, "FIX THE GAME!"
Some said that the new weapons will be nerfed in a few days anyway, so they won't bother stumping up for the Freedom's Flame Premium Warbond. Summing up a lot of complaints, one Helldiver concluded, "Dudes your game has become so boring, there’s nothing new to try, nothing new to do. These aesthetic things are just useless at this point. Honest opinion."
It's true that Helldivers 2 players feel like they've been starved of content, so delivering another cosmetic Warbond (as fiery as it might be) was always going to be a risk. As it's expected to cost the usual 1000 Super Credits, it's also not cheap. Yet again, this is another Helldivers 2 update without the Illuminate raining down on us from above.
